Supporting Sensory Needs on the Fourth of July

ree

Happy Fourth of July! 🇺🇸🎆

While this holiday is filled with excitement, fireworks, and fun, it can also be overwhelming for children with sensory processing differences. By planning ahead and incorporating a few simple supports, families can enjoy the celebration in a way that feels safe, inclusive, and joyful for everyone.

Here are some Occupational Therapist-approved tips to help make your Fourth of July more sensory-friendly:

🔊 Auditory Supports

Fireworks are loud and unpredictable, which can be distressing for those with auditory sensitivities. Noise-canceling headphones or earplugs can significantly reduce the impact of these sounds and help your child feel more at ease.

🕶 Visual Supports

Bright flashes and flickering lights can be visually overstimulating. Sunglasses or even a hooded sweatshirt can help minimize visual input and provide comfort in bright or chaotic environments.

🧸 Tactile Supports

Bringing along a weighted lap pad, small fidget toy, or soft blanket can offer grounding input. These tactile tools can help your child feel safe and calm, especially during moments of high excitement or sensory overload.

🚪 Exit Strategy

Have a plan in place for breaks. Identify a quiet space nearby where your child can retreat if the event becomes overwhelming. Let them know ahead of time that it’s okay to take breaks or even leave early if they need to.

Remember: Every child experiences the world differently, and honoring their sensory needs can make a big difference in how they experience holidays and special events.

From all of us at Hands On Play Pediatric Therapy, we wish you a joyful and inclusive Independence Day!
